“And if the elevator tries to bring you down, Go crazy, punch a higher floor” ~ “Let’s Go Crazy” Prince & The Revolution

What do you do when you are hyper aware? How do you stay passionately humane in the face of your own demons? Secret of Color is about a community of friends trying to outlive death, addiction, and infertility; it’s about creative writing and a peculiar transcendent form of possession; it’s about being orphaned amidst an overwhelming family village. Take a journey with these remarkable people as they discover how color can be one lens through which we access humor and compassion.
If you read the above “elevator pitch” would you be intrigued enough to pick it up to read? “It’s never just one thing” as my friend says when we discuss health mentoring approaches. One gift of life is a panoply of topics, a cluster of stories, a collection of perspectives. To simplify a fledgling novel (the first in a drafted series of three – I think), into three or four sentences might feel impossible because life belies easy description. Thus, the invention of plot drama.
Do you also agree with Mr. Silliphant that plot happens as people characterize themselves in action?
“I detest the word plot. I never, never think of plot. I think only and solely of character. Give me the characters; I’ll tell you a story-maybe a thousand stories. The interaction between and among human beings is the only story worth telling.”— Stirling Silliphant
