Have you ever bent to sniff the frilly bell of spring’s first daffodils? Their vivid hopefulness warms the heart after dark winter. A full-scented daffodil has a fresh, innocent almost indecipherably complex fragrance. First the nose detects a jasmine, ylang ylang musk that is dry and deep. Next comes green alertness of petitgrain leaf, followed by uplifting notes of juicy grapefruit (sharper than the star lemon of its coloring), and finally the sweet finish of an herbaceous rose geranium. Their scent is wrapped up inside their sunny cones like a definition and a promise of Spring.
Unfortunately, not all daffodils smell like the real thing as if they’ve been cultivated within an inch of their origin. Many have been diluted out of their essence. but it’s worth trying them all until you land on the real thing. Like the Greek myth for which it’s named Narcissus displays a pretty face but may not have much character beyond that.
